Ford can't escape Han Solo, Indiana Jones

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? It's been years since Harrison Ford played towering film characters Indiana Jones and Han Solo, but the questions still come ? especially at Comic-Con.

Ford made his second appearance at the all-things-geek gathering Thursday to promote his new film "Ender's Game." It might as well have been the 1980s, though, as far as fans were concerned. Given the chance to ask questions about the new film, they instead peppered the 71-year-old star with questions about characters he long ago left behind.

One fan asked, "light sabers aside," what might happen if Solo, the Millennium Falcon pilot from "Star Wars," met Jones, the adventure-addicted archaeologist.

"Hi, how are you?" Ford asked before shaking his head, taking off his glasses and rubbing his eyes in a marvelous moment of comedic timing.

Another questioner, a man from Brazil who said he dreamed of being the whip-wielding, fedora-featuring Jones as a kid, asked if Solo would make a good soldier for Col. Hyrum Graff, the character Ford plays in "Ender's Game."

"You know, you and I have a lot in common. I used to dream about being Indiana Jones when I was younger. Not so much anymore," Ford said, pausing while the audience laughed. "I don't think Han Solo would be good as a soldier in anybody's army. I think he's what we call now an independent contractor."

NCAA ends ties with video game franchise

NEW YORK ? Hang on to NCAA Football 2014, all you video game fans. It will be a collector?s edition.

The NCAA said Wednesday it will no longer allow Electronic Arts Inc. to use its logo starting next year. The move ends a lucrative business deal with the gaming industry giant and comes as the NCAA fights a high-profile lawsuit that says the governing body owes billions of dollars to former players for allowing their likenesses to be used for free.

The NCAA said it won?t seek a new contract with EA Sports, which manufactures the popular game, beyond the current one that expires in June 2014. However, that won?t stop EA Sports from producing a college football video game depicting powerhouse schools like Alabama, Ohio State and Oregon, and the Redwood City, Calif.-based company made that clear.

?EA Sports will continue to develop and publish college football games, but we will no longer include the NCAA names and marks,? said Andrew Wilson, executive vice president. ?Our relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Co. is strong and we are already working on a new game for next generation consoles which will launch next year.?

The company reported $3.8 billion in net revenue during its last fiscal year and, aside from its NCAA Football franchise, is well known for Madden NFL, FIFA Soccer and other games.

EA Sports first began making an NCAA Football game in 1998.

Todd Mitchell, senior analyst with New York-based Brean Capital, LLC, said losing the NCAA brand isn?t likely to hurt EA Sports. He estimated NCAA Football accounts for only about 5 percent of EA Sports? revenue, or about $125 million.

?It?s nice to have the brand, but it?s more about the characters,? he said.

It could not immediately be determined exactly how much of what EA makes from NCAA football goes back to the NCAA and its members in licensing deals.

Analyst Colin Sebastian of R.W. Baird said EA likely expected to lose its NCAA partnership.

?I?m sure they have thought about this because of this pending litigation and the worst case scenarios,? Sebastian said. ?I don?t expect it to have a significant impact on their business.?

NCAA Football allows participants to play as any major college football team, though unlike in its professional sports games, the names of players and coaches are not used. The similarities between the avatars in the game and actual college athletes are at the root of a legal fight that could alter the way the NCAA does business in the future.

The NCAA is in the midst of a long court battle that started with a lawsuit filed by former UCLA basketball star Ed O?Bannon after he was shown a video game with an avatar playing for the Bruins that played a lot like him.

The anti-trust lawsuit also names EA and the Collegiate Licensing Company that handles trademark licensing for dozens of schools, the NCAA and various conferences. The suit has expanded to include several former athletes who claim the NCAA and EA Sports used their names and likenesses without compensation and demand the NCAA find a way to give players a cut of the billions of dollars earned from live broadcasts, memorabilia sales and video games.

?We are confident in our legal position regarding the use of our trademarks in video games,? the NCAA said. ?But given the current business climate and costs of litigation, we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA.?

Still, the NCAA said its members can seek arrangements with video game makers if they wish.

Michael Hausfeld, the lead attorney on the O?Bannon case, said the NCAA cutting ties with EA could provide greater freedom for EA to make deals with conferences, schools and even players.

?No longer would EA have to pretend the avatars are not the likenesses of the real players,? he said.

Bearing witness to the phenomenon of symmetric cell division

[unable to retrieve full-text content]For more than 125 years, scientists have been peering through microscopes, carefully watching cells divide. Until now, however, none has actually seen how cells manage to divide precisely into two equally-sized daughter cells during mitosis. Such perfect division depends on the position of the mitotic spindle (chromosomes, microtubules, and spindle poles) within the cell, and it?s now clear that human cells employ two specific mechanisms during the portion of division known as anaphase to correct mitotic spindle positioning.

House GOP Resisting Pressure to Rush an Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON ? House Republicans are facing increased pressure from the White House and members of the Senate to act on immigration reform but it appears leadership doesn?t intend to address the issue any time soon.

Lawmakers who attended a meeting of the GOP caucus last week said leadership is still formulating its answer to the nation?s immigration problem and probably won?t have any defined plan until after the August recess. It?s possible, however, that immigration-related measures that already have passed the House Judiciary Committee dealing with enforcement and border security could be placed on the agenda sooner rather than later.

?My job is to do everything I can to facilitate a process for solving this problem,? said House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio). ?And that?s what I?m going to continue to do.?

Boehner already has made clear that he doesn?t intend to stage a vote on the ?flawed legislation rushed through the Senate? and won?t hold a vote on any bill that doesn?t carry the support of the chamber?s GOP lawmakers.

In a statement, Boehner, House Republican Leader Eric Cantor, and several pre-eminent officials in the Republican caucus expressed their intention to take a ?step-by-step, common-sense approach to fixing what has long been a broken system.? The group added that the public doesn?t trust the Democrats or support ?a single, massive, Obamacare-like bill.?

President Obama, they said, ?has also demonstrated he is willing to unilaterally delay or ignore significant portions of laws he himself has signed, raising concerns among Americans that this administration cannot be trusted to deliver on its promises to secure the border and enforce laws as part of a single, massive bill like the one passed by the Senate.?

For its part, the White House, which remained relatively quiet during the intense negotiations that resulted in the Senate immigration bill, is slowly building up pressure in an effort to force the House to take action.

Obama Press Secretary Jay Carney said the White House will ?continue to work with other lawmakers in the House and the Senate as this issue continues to develop.?

?The president will engage, as he has all along, and he will make clear his support for and his insistence upon comprehensive immigration reform because it?s the right thing for our economy and it?s the right thing for our people,? Carney said. ?How that manifests itself, what events he may hold, we?ll have to see, because we?re going to make those judgments as this issue ripens over the next weeks and months.?

Asked about the expectation that the House won?t address the issue until after the August recess, Carney responded, ?We have said all along that the Congress should address this deliberately but quickly.?

?There has been obviously a great amount of time spent over the years, certainly since the middle of the last decade, on this issue,? he said. ?A lot of work has been done.?A lot of work was done to produce the bipartisan Senate bill, and now work is being done in the House.?So we believe that the House can and should act quickly.?We don?t control the House so we obviously have to work with the House, as the Senate does, as they move through this issue.?

The Senate bill, the first major immigration legislation addressed by the upper chamber since 1986, passed in a bipartisan vote of 68-32. It offers illegal immigrants who have resided in the U.S. since Dec. 13, 2011, an opportunity to seek provisional legal status that allows them to work but renders them ineligible for federal benefits. They must pay a penalty, taxes and a processing fee and can only apply for permanent status after 10 years. A new visa program for low-skilled workers would also be developed.

It also hikes border patrol ranks by 20,000 ? almost doubling the contingent at a cost of $30 billion ? and adds 350 miles of border fencing. It spends $4.5 billion on technical innovations intended to provide security personnel with full situational awareness along the southern border. And it implements an entry-exit visa program to keep tabs on visitors who overextend their stay as well as the so-called e-verify program to make employers aware of a potential worker?s immigration status.

The House is unlikely to pass anything akin to the Senate measure. A significant segment of the controlling Republican caucus opposes any provision that they maintain provides amnesty to the estimated undocumented workers who already reside within the nation?s borders. And they don?t feel the border security steps contained in the Senate bill are sufficient.

Chris Brown Probation Revoked

Chris Brown’s probation is revoked, but for now the singer is still free. He is due back in court at the end of July, and it seems that the judge has had it with his bad boy behavior.   Some people may think that Chris Brown is reformed. He has issued apology after apology, broke down crying on stage and a ton of other PR stunts to prove he is sorry. Heck, Rihanna even got back with him for a hot second. But when Chris Brown was involved in a it and run, it sure doesn’t sound like he has changed much. A woman named only as Olga G. is the other driver in the hit and run accident and she didn’t even know who the pop star was until after it made news. She says Chris started off as polite, but after she asked for identification and insurance – you know the common things you need in a crash – he freaked. Chris’ girlfriend,? Karrueche Tientrese Tran, offered her driver’s license and said the car belonged to her, while Chris refuse to hand over his ID. Olga then took a pic of the couple and that is when Chris [...]

Senate nomination pact averts meltdown _ for now

Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? A bipartisan Senate pact has smoothed the confirmation path for a batch of President Barack Obama's nominations and removed, for now, a Democratic threat to impose procedural changes weakening minority Republicans' clout. Yet there are no guarantees that the conflict won't flare anew the next time a White House appointment stirs controversy.

A day after both parties celebrated an agreement averting a bitter fight over Senate rules, the chamber planned to vote Wednesday on one of Obama's picks, Fred Hochberg to be president of the Export-Import Bank.

Also possible this week are roll calls on Labor Secretary-designate Tom Perez and Gina McCarthy, Obama's choice to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.

On Tuesday, Republicans agreed to allow quick votes on seven Obama selections by simple majority margins, rather than forcing Democrats to garner 60 votes to succeed. Hours later, the Senate by 66-34 approved the first of those appointments, confirming Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ? after Republicans had blocked him for nearly two years as they demanded changes in the agency's structure and financing.

In a written statement, Obama thanked Senate leaders for working out their dispute but criticized his opponents for using "purely political reasons" to stall the nominations.

"In the weeks ahead, I hope the Congress will build on this spirit of cooperation to advance other urgent middle-class priorities" like revamping immigration laws and keeping student loan interest rates from rising, Obama said.

In exchange for the GOP concessions on the nominations, Democrats agreed to drop their effort to change the chamber's rules. Obama also submitted two new nominees for a pair of labor posts after Republicans adamantly opposed his initial picks.

"Does that mean it will last forever? I don't know about that," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said of the accord. But he added, "We have a new start for this body, and I feel very comfortable with it."

Democrats had been threatening to muscle through a rules change preventing opponents from forcing top agency nominees to win 60 votes from the 100-member Senate.

That would have diminished the chamber's filibuster rule that minority parties, Republicans as well as Democrats, have long cherished as a tool that prevents them from becoming virtually irrelevant. Changing the Senate's rules by majority vote ? instead of the two-thirds margin usually required when the plan is controversial ? is unusual and considered likely to invite such harsh retaliation that it is called the nuclear option.

"I think it's a step in the right direction that the majority has chosen not to exercise the nuclear option," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. "We feel good about that. I think they feel good about it. So I think that crisis has been averted."

The standoff was resolved following an exceptional closed-door meeting in the Capitol's old Senate chamber Monday night, attended by nearly every senator. For the previous several days, senators had met and made phone calls in an effort to head off a clash, with several lawmakers crediting Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for helping bring the sides together.

As part of the resulting agreement, Obama withdrew his nominations of two nominees to the National Labor Relations Board, Richard Griffin and Sharon Clark. Obama installed Griffin and Clark onto the board in 2011, bypassing the Senate but triggering a legal challenge in which an appeals court has said the two appointments were invalid. Republicans were insistent that those selections be replaced.

In their places, Obama nominated Nancy Schiffer, a former top lawyer for the AFL-CIO, and Kent Hirozawa, counsel to NLRB Chairman Mark Pearce. Reid said he was planning for the Senate to confirm both next week.

The seventh Obama appointment involved in the bipartisan deal is Pearce, whose pick is relatively uncontroversial. The NLRB appointments, if confirmed as expected, would prevent the virtual shutdown of the agency because of a lack of confirmed board members to rule on collective bargaining disputes between unions and companies.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has discovered a new moon orbiting the distant blue-green planet Neptune, the 14th known to be circling the giant planet.

The moon, designated S/2004 N 1, is estimated to be no more than 12 miles across, making it the smallest known moon in the Neptunian system. It is so small and dim that it is roughly 100 million times fainter than the faintest star that can be seen with the naked eye. It even escaped detection by NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft, which flew past Neptune in 1989 and surveyed the planet's system of moons and rings.

Mark Showalter of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif., found the moon July 1, while studying the faint arcs, or segments of rings, around Neptune. "The moons and arcs orbit very quickly, so we had to devise a way to follow their motion in order to bring out the details of the system," he said. "It's the same reason a sports photographer tracks a running athlete -- the athlete stays in focus, but the background blurs."

The method involved tracking the movement of a white dot that appears over and over again in more than 150 archival Neptune photographs taken by Hubble from 2004 to 2009.

On a whim, Showalter looked far beyond the ring segments and noticed the white dot about 65,400 miles from Neptune, located between the orbits of the Neptunian moons Larissa and Proteus. The dot is S/2004 N 1. Showalter plotted a circular orbit for the moon, which completes one revolution around Neptune every 23 hours.

Prince William plays polo as baby watch heats up

LONDON (AP) ? His wife may be due to have her baby soon, but Prince William isn't one to sit tight and wait for the news ? instead, he's off playing polo.

Many in the British press have predicted that the first child of the prince and the Duchess of Cambridge, formerly known as Kate Middleton, is expected to arrive on Sunday. Dozens of bleary-eyed photographers and cameramen have been standing guard around the clock on royal baby watch outside St. Mary's Hospital in London.

But the prince was enjoying a game of polo with his brother Prince Harry at a charity match at Cirencester Park Polo Club, almost 100 miles (161 kilometers) west of the capital, on Sunday.

William appeared relaxed and was seen greeting locals who went up to meet him in footage broadcast on Sky News.

According to bookmaker William Hill, most people are betting money on a royal birth Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.

Officials have said that the baby is due around mid-July, but have not released a due date. The birth, when it does come, will be announced by a bulletin posted on a wooden easel placed outside Buckingham Palace.

It's a time-honored royal tradition ? the birth of William's father, Prince Charles, was announced the same way in 1948. This time, however, officials have adapted to modern times by adding a simultaneous announcement on Twitter, so that millions around the world can get the news within seconds.

Rupert Adams, spokesman for William Hill, said that the most fervent betting has been on the name of the baby. Alexandra, Charlotte, Elizabeth and George are among the top contenders so far, he said.

Their secret weapon: burgers and beer. (AP Photo/Hannah Foslien, File)

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? Welcome to the ?Max and Dave Show,? a campaign-style swing around the country featuring two of the most powerful members of Congress rallying support for their effort to overhaul the nation?s tax laws ? and, just maybe, change the way Washington works.

Sen. Max Baucus, a Democrat from Montana, and Rep. Dave Camp, a Republican from Michigan, are Washington?s newest power couple ? and an odd one during these politically deadlocked days in Washington. They are lawmakers of different states, different parties and they?re a decade in age apart. Yet, Camp and Baucus are developing a close friendship as they try to rally other lawmakers to their cause.

Their secret: Burgers, beer and a culture of working toward public policy answers that Americans seem to want in Washington ? even when there?s no solution in sight.

?Dave?s my buddy,? Baucus told a gathering of workers at 3M, the Minnesota-based maker of everything from Scotch tape to electronic touch screens. ?My comrade.?

These days, you don?t often hear Democrats talk that way about Republicans, or see campaign-style events for a topic as dry as tax reform. But the pair have a common goal for an overhaul they believe is long overdue. And tax policy, to them, is exciting for all that is wrong and could be improved about it. So beginning last week in Minnesota, Baucus and Camp began barnstorming the country, employing a similar burgers-and-beer strategy that?s worked for them with colleagues in Washington.

?You have to have some basis to deal with each other to work together,? Camp said in an interview. ?What we?re trying to do is create that foundation so that we are going to be able to work together on a very important bill that could have profound beneficial effects for the country.?

At issue is a tax system that many inside and outside of Congress say is too complicated for individuals and too onerous for businesses. The broad goal of tax reform is to simplify the code by eliminating or reducing tax breaks and using the additional revenue to lower tax rates for everyone.

Lawmakers in both political parties are convinced that simpler, easier-to-understand tax laws would spur economic activity. One problem is that many of the biggest tax breaks, including those for owning a home or contributing to retirement plans, are very popular.

And there are significant differences among Democrats and Republicans over how much tax revenue the government should raise and who should pay it. Democrats generally want reform to generate more revenue; most Republicans in Congress are opposed to raising taxes.

Camp and Baucus also are working in a toxic partisan environment in Washington that makes it difficult for Congress to pass routine legislation, let alone a monumental package like tax reform.

?I don?t see how we get anywhere, candidly,? said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who is up for re-election in Kentucky next year.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wasn?t much more optimistic. ?We?re a long way from getting something on paper as to what we?re going to go forward on,? Reid said.

Still, Baucus and Camp are pressing forward.

Camp, 60, grew up in Midland, Mich., and was first elected to the House in 1990. A close ally of House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, Camp chairs the House Ways and Means Committee, which has authority over tax laws.

Its Senate counterpart is the Finance Committee, chaired by the 71-year-old Baucus. For him, it?s legacy time. Baucus grew up on a ranch near Helena, Mont., was elected to the Senate in 1978 and has become an independent voice generally more conservative than many of his Democratic colleagues. He?s announced plans to retire next year, and tax reform would be his swan song.

Face time is key to the effort in Washington and beyond.

The Montana senator says he is on track to meet individually with every member of the Senate by the end of the month. Camp is trying to forge bipartisan relationships on the Ways and Means Committee by pairing small groups of Republicans and Democrats to develop options for addressing different parts of the tax law.

Every few weeks, Baucus and Camp invite about a dozen lawmakers to lunch at a Capitol Hill pub, always a mix of Democrats and Republicans, senators and House members.

Camp and Baucus have dubbed their lunches ?burgers and beer,? and the location ? a pub called Kelly?s Irish Times ? has historic significance. Former Sen. Bob Packwood, R-Ore., is credited with helping to rescue the 1986 tax reform package with a plan he devised over two pitchers of beer at the pub. At the time, Packwood was chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, a position now held by Baucus.

?Part of it is, we?ve been so polarized in this town, this Congress for so many years, many of us don?t know each other,? Baucus said. ?A burger and beers makes a lot more sense to me than a fancy dinner.?

Camp and Baucus have held two lunches so far. The latest was Tuesday, and Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Kansas, was there. She said Camp and Baucus are setting a good example for other lawmakers.

?There was a time when members of Congress moved their families to Washington, and they got to know each other. Their kids went to school together, they went to church together, they socialized together,? Jenkins said. ?We don?t do that anymore. Our constituents demand that we be in church with them on Sunday.?

Rep. John Larson, D-Conn., was at the lunch, too.

?It?s when preparation meets opportunity that something can happen, and that preparation just happens to coincide with knowing your colleagues,? Larson said. ?And knowing them not like, ?Hey, let?s go out and have a beer.? I?m talking about knowing them in terms of going through what the issues are.?

Camp says he is committed to passing a tax reform bill out of the Ways and Means Committee by the end of the year. There is no guarantee the full House would vote on a bill. But Boehner has signaled his support for the effort by reserving the prestigious bill number HR 1 for a tax overhaul measure.

In the Senate, Baucus is teaming with Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, to write a new tax code, almost from scratch. Instead of trying to figure out which tax breaks to scrap, Baucus and Hatch are starting with a blank slate and inviting other senators to make the case for restoring various deductions, credits and exemptions.

In a question-and-answer session with 3M workers, Fred Palensky, the company?s chief technology officer, hit on a theme that Baucus and Camp will have to deal with.

Palensky said he has met with members of Congress in the past and, on an individual basis, they seem like reasonable, sensible people. What happens to them when they get together back in Washington? Palensky asked Camp and Baucus.

?We?re trying to break, frankly, the Washington method of operation,? Baucus said. ?Most people in the country want us to work together. Not the Washington way, which is gridlock, but the American way, which is work together and get things done.?

JK Rowling: How She Was Exposed As Robert Galbraith - Business ...

By now almost everyone will have heard the news ? J.K. Rowling, the author of the "Harry Potter" series of books and one of the most successful writers ever, published a low-selling but highly praised detective novel under the name Robert Galbraith earlier this year.

The story was broken last night by Richard Brooks, the arts editor of the UK's Sunday Times. It's clearly a huge scoop ? but how exactly did Brooks manage to crack the literary world's best-kept secret?

Thanks to Sarah Lyall of the New York Times, we believe we know the point where the investigation began. In an interview, Brooks told Lyall that the story started when a female colleague tweeted about the book, and an anonymous twitter user told this colleague that the book was in fact by J.K. Rowling. This anonymous twitter user then disappeared, according to Brooks' account.

After doing some digging, we believe we may have found the tweet. On Wednesday, India Knight, one of the Sunday Times' star columnists, began tweeting about "The Cuckoo's Calling." Here's one key tweet:

At this point a random Twitter user chimed in to say something about the obscure book. While this user appears to have since deleted the tweets, you can see Knight's surprised responses:

It's unclear exactly who Jude Callegari is, or how he or she would know the real identity of Robert Galbraith. The account is still active, though it has no tweets since July 2.

Whomever it was sent by, the anonymous tweet was enough to get Brooks digging, and soon he had found that "The Cuckoo's Calling" had the same publisher, editor, and agent as Rowling's last book, ?The Casual Vacancy." The books also shared themes in their linguistics and content, Brooks noted.

By Friday night he had enough to go to Rowlings with his findings ? and by Saturday morning, she had confessed, though she told the Sunday Times she had "hoped to keep this secret a little longer."

Dixon makes it 2 straight with win at Toronto

TORONTO (AP) ? Scott Dixon passed Sebastien Bourdais with nine laps to go Saturday to win on the street course at Toronto.

It's Dixon's second consecutive win after picking up his first victory of the season last weekend at Pocono.

The 31st win of his career moved him into a tie for seventh on the all-time win list with teammate Dario Franchitti, Bourdais and Paul Tracy.

Bourdais was second in his first podium finish since the 2007 Champ Car season.

Franchitti was third after giving up the position to Will Power on the last lap, but Power couldn't make the pass stick as he hit the tire barrier after slipping ahead.

Maro Andretti was fourth, followed by Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan and IndyCar Series leader Helio Castroneves.

Power dropped to 15th.

Ambush kills 7 UN peacekeepers in Sudan's Darfur

CAIRO (AP) ? Gunmen ambushed a United Nations peacekeeping team Saturday in Sudan's western region of Darfur, killing seven and wounding another 17 in the deadliest ever single attack on the international force in the country.

The assault included sustained heavy fire from machine guns and possibly rocket-propelled grenades, targeting the force some 25 kilometers (15 miles) west of the town of Khor Abeche, U.N. forces spokesman Chris Cycmanick said. Reinforcements later arrived to rescue the wounded, who included two female police advisers, the force said in a statement.

It wasn't immediately clear if any civilian personnel accompanied the team into the ambush, Cycmanick said. He declined to give the nationalities of those killed and wounded in the attack. Tanzanian troops have regularly patrolled the area in the past. About 40 countries have contributed military personnel or police to the peacekeeping force.

Peacekeepers have been targeted by assailants in the past in the region since the international force began its work there in 2008. In the last fatal attack, gunmen shot dead a Nigerian peacekeeper in April in East Darfur State. Before Saturday's attack, 150 people associated with the U.N. mission had been killed while on duty in the region, according to the force's website.

The joint African Union-U.N. peacekeeping force, dubbed UNAMID, was established to protect civilians in Darfur, but also contributes to security for those providing humanitarian aid, verifying agreements, political reconciliation efforts and promoting human rights. It has about 16,500 troops and military observers and over 5,000 international police.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault Saturday. Tribal clashes remain common in the region and some former government militias have begun taking up arms again as fighting continues over land and resources.

A February report by a U.N. panel of experts said that some armed opposition groups angry about the presence of peacekeepers have called the force "a legitimate target."

"On occasion, this discontent has also manifested itself in incidents of direct attacks on UNAMID staff and premises, although some of these incidents ? especially those of carjacking and kidnapping of UNAMID peacekeepers ? appear to have an overtly criminal intent of financial gain for the perpetrators," the report said.

Darfur has been gripped by bloodshed since 2003 when rebels took up arms against the government in Khartoum. More than 300,000 people have been killed in the conflict. The International Criminal Court indicted Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in 2009 on genocide and war crimes charges over the fighting in Darfur. The country split into Sudan and South Sudan in 2011.

Unrest continues in the region. About 300,000 people have fled fighting throughout Darfur in the first five months of this year, the U.N. has said.

"The mission condemns in the strongest possible terms those responsible for this heinous attack on our peacekeepers," said Mohamed Ibn Chambas, a joint special representative of the force. "The perpetrators should be on notice that they will be pursued for this crime and gross violation of international humanitarian law."

More than 100 U.N. peacekeepers were killed last year alone on duty in the Darfur and Abyei regions of Sudan, Congo, Ivory Coast and other countries. Eight more civilian contractors, such as pilots, also died on deployment with peacekeeping missions in 2012.

Ousted president's backers protest in Egypt

CAIRO (AP) ? Tens of thousands of supporters of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood massed in main squares in several cities on Friday, waving pictures of Mohammed Morsi and chanting that the head of the military is a "traitor," stepping up denunciations of the army over its removal of the country's first freely elected president.

Islamists vow they can continue their campaign of street rallies as long as necessary to force the reinstitution of Morsi. But at the same time, the new military-backed administration has intensified its crackdown on the leadership of Morsi's Brotherhood, starting criminal investigations against Morsi and issuing arrest warrants on a host of others.

At the main Islamist rally in Cairo, the crowd poured into a large boulevard in front of a main mosque where Morsi supporters have been camped out for two weeks.

"We are ready to stay for a month, two months, a year or even two years," an ultraconservative Salafi cleric, Safwat Hegazi, told protesters from a state set up in front of the Rabaa al-Adawiya Mosque. "Some women proposed to bring ovens to bake sweets for the Eid," he said, referring to the festive holiday that marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, when began on Wednesday.

Their sit-in at the mosque has taken on a more dug-in presence ? with military troops staying a relative distance away of about a kilometer (half-mile) to avoid direct frictions so far.

Tents have been erected, toilets set up with brick walls in front of them to give some privacy. As on other days, the crowd has filled up a major intersection in front of the mosque and some ways down the boulevards, with supporters travelling from the provinces to join in.

During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset, which usually cuts down on activity during the day ? particularly outdoors in warm summer temperatures. During the daytime fast Friday, some at the rally rested in their tents, reading the Quran or sleeping.

"We have a daily routine of prayers and Quran recitations, then marches around the sit-in," said Hassan al-Ghandoor, a tailor from the Nile Delta who came to the rally on July 3, the day Morsi was ousted, and hasn't left it since.

"The level of spirituality of this place helps us put up with the daily difficulties," he said. "We are here for an objective and we will stay here until it is accomplished."

Thousands more rallied across the Nile River in Cairo's sister city Giza, and Morsi supporters held a string of marches around the capital, converging on the main rallies. Similar protesters were held rallies in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and several other cities.

Still, the Brotherhood and other Islamists face the question of how to step up their campaign. So far, they have succeeded in pulling out the strong numbers of their own ranks ? but there has been little sign of a wider portion of the public joining. Morsi supporters have touted their campaign as a defense of democracy against a military coup that removed an elected leader, warning that the army is turning the country back into dictatorship.

But at the same time, many of its leaders also engage in the rhetoric of political Islamist movements more appealing to their base than other sectors of the public. The four days of protests demanding Morsi's removal, which began June 30, brought out millions around the country ? though since his fall those rallies have tapered.

The new administration, meanwhile, is pushing ahead quickly with its transition plans, in part to create a reality and force the Brotherhood to accept it and to show that the country is moving toward democracy. At the same time, authorities are pulling out multiple allegations aimed at showing Morsi's supporters are linked to violence and militancy.

On Friday, some protesters marched from Rabaa al-Adawiya in eastern Cairo toward the nearby Republican Guard headquarters, where on Monday troops killed more than 50 Morsi supporters in clashes at an Islamist sit-in. The military says the Islamists sparked the clashes by shooting at troops, though the protesters say the troops attacked them without provocation.

A number of Brotherhood leaders with arrest warrants against them are permanently staying at a medical center connected to the Rabaa al-Adawiya, Brotherhood spokesman Ahmed Aref told The Associated Press, though he underlined that they are not hiding from arrest. Among them are Mohammed el-Beltagy, a leadership figure, and the deputy head of the Brotherhood's political party Essam el-Erian ? though Aref said the Brotherhood's spiritual leader, Mohammed Badie, is not at the site. Aref said he did not know where Badie was.

Morsi has been held in an undisclosed military facility since the coup against him on July 3, sparked after four days of massive protests by millions nationwide demanding his removal.

Five other Brotherhood leaders are also in detention on various charges, and 10 others ? including Badie ?have arrest warrants against them on accusations of triggering clashes on Monday. More than 50 of Morsi's supporters were killed in those clashes, outside a headquarters of the Republican Guards.

Gehad el-Haddad, the group's spokesman, said in a message posted on his Twitter account that those in detention are "denied visitation, or delivery of clothes, food. All held in solitary confinement."

A day earlier, prosecutors said they will investigate allegations that Morsi and 30 others Brotherhood leaders escaped from prison during the 2011 revolution with help from the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Anger at the military was rife at Friday's rallies. Protesters carried posters depicting army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi with blood coming out of his mouth and emblazoned with "traitor." Some banners appeared to be addressing foreign media, with English slogans like, "legitimacy is a red line" ? underlining that Morsi is the country's legitimate president.

"Did el-Sissi sell his religion cheaply?" one speaker on the Rabaa al-Adawiya stage asked, and the crowd chanted back, "Leave, el-Sissi."

"We are designated martyrs," the speaker said. "We call on el-Sissi and those who participated in this grand treason to repent."

Speaking to the AP at the square, al-Haddad said their rally was growing, a continuation of the 2011 revolution against autocrat Hosni Mubarak, which had been centered at Cairo's Tahrir Square, across town from the mosque.

"This is exactly what we did in Tahrir during the revolution. We are doing it here," he said, adding that the Brotherhood's organization can "keep functioning under a repressive police state." He said even people not participating were helping by bringing food to the rally to break the fast.s

"Numbers are increasing, and more locations in Cairo will come," he said. "We are not talking in weeks we are talking in months."

Mostafa Youssef, 27-year-old-cleric described the military-backed interim President Adly Mansour and his administration as "puppets while the real power is in the hand of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces. Civilians are just a facade."

Protesters in helmets and home-made body shields and sticks, formed human chains guarding the square, with some self-searching visitors.

"This is a coup," said a 20-year-old Ahmed Ismail. "We are going back 100 years to a police state and if we shut up now we won't have any voice in the future," he added.

Still, officials in the sole Islamist party that backed Morsi's removal, the Salafi Al-Nour, argued that the Brotherhood had to accept reality, and said the party was reaching out through mediators to try to convince it.

"I know the Muslim Brotherhood has stamina," said Amro Mekki, a senior Al-Nour figure. "We can disagree on whether this is a coup or a revolution, but there is a reality on the ground and we have to deal with it not in a negative way."

He said the Brotherhood needs to move into an opposition position within the new system.

"The thing is, whoever moved the street is the one who takes over power. Now the military is in charge, ruling the country, and the test will be to withdraw powers from the military to civilians."

US Navy To Begin Production of Lego Robot Army

A few days ago the Department of the Navy solicited procurement for Lego Mindstorm NXT Robotics Kits, for use at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. These programmable kits allow users to not only build robots, but also provide software to test and modify real-life robotic behaviors. Hello Skynet!

Lego Mindstorms features an advanced 32-bit computer-controlled NXT brick, interactive servo motors, Bluetooth communication and multiple downloading capabilities. Each kit includes touch, light, sound and ultrasonic sensors with compass, color and accelerometer add-ons.

The Naval Supply Systems Command Logistics Center, located Norfolk, VA, put in the request a few days ago:

The NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Norfolk, Norfolk, VA intends to solicit a sole source procurement action with Firm Fixed-Price provisions for Lego Mindstorm NXT Robotics kits from Lego Education, Pittsburg, KS for the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. The Robotic kits will be acquired in accordance with the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) [US Navy]

I think we all know where this is heading. One can only hope that these Lego robots never become self-aware and turn on us. Imagine the horror of an artificially-intelligent Lego supercomputer keen on starting global thermonuclear war! I think we should all hold our children a little tighter tonight. On the plus side, Lego drone sets are sure to be hot sellers this holiday season! [Defense Systems]
