Anti-Europe party wants EU vote guarantee "in blood"

BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - The leader of an anti-European Union party that could have an impact on the next election said it could do a deal with the Conservatives or another party if it were guaranteed "in blood" a referendum on EU membership.

The small UK Independence Party (UKIP) has been rising in popularity, capitalising on the economic crisis in Europe and attracting eurosceptic voters from Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives.

Its leader, Nigel Farage, has used fiery anti-EU rhetoric to galvanise his supporters, in one case telling the European Council president that he had the "charisma of a damp rag and the appearance of a low-grade bank clerk".

Commentators say UKIP could benefit from Britain's prolonged economic gloom, which the government blames on the euro zone debt crisis, and could further eat into support for the Conservatives, which has many eurosceptic members.

By contrast, any pact with the Conservatives ahead of the 2015 election might avert the risk for Cameron of a split in the right-wing vote and help him secure closely-fought seats.

"The only way we would even consider a negotiation of any kind at all would be if first an absolute promise was made to give this country a full, free and fair referendum so that we can decide whether we remain members of the EU or not," Farage told a UKIP conference in Birmingham on Friday.

"I don't think a cast-iron guarantee would satisfy UKIP, I think at a minimum it would have to be written in blood," he said to loud applause by hundreds of delegates.

Farage denied media speculation that he had offered a deal and said any talk of a possible pact had come from the Conservatives, who he said were anticipating a breakup of their coalition with the Lib Dems. But he left the door open.

"If an opportunity came which meant that we could get this country closer to walking through a door marked 'UK independence,' if we had the opportunity to do something that was in our national interest, we would be silly not to at least consider it," he said.

UKIP wants Britain to leave the 27-nation EU, which it sees as an ineffective organisation of mostly unelected bureaucrats. Britain has been an EU member since 1973.

REVIEW OF EU RELATIONSHIP

Cameron has resisted calls, including from right-wingers in his own party, to hold an in/out referendum. But, keen to avoid the party strife over Europe that sank the careers of Margaret Thatcher and John Major, Cameron has pledged a review of the UK's relationship with Europe and a referendum in the future.

Paradoxically, the UKIP has had some of its biggest electoral successes in the European Parliament, where it currently has 12 members, including Farage.

A dapper former commodities trader who once survived a plane crash, Farage is an able public speaker who is seeking to move his party from protest-vote movement to major player in right-wing British politics.

The party recorded its best-ever local election results in May and recent polls have shown its national support on the rise - at around 10 percent compared to the last general election, when it won 3 percent of the vote but failed to elect a single MP.

Farage makes no secret of his ambitions, saying he wants to win European Parliament elections held in 2014.

"That would change the game," said a party spokesman.

He said a deal with the Conservatives or another major party might mean that UKIP candidates stand down in some races and Conservatives in others, clearing the way for UKIP to break into parliament. But, the spokesman stressed, not such detail had been considered.

The three-day conference in Birmingham was designed to show UKIP is more than a single-issue party, with speakers talking about immigration and environmental policies. Guests included Timo Soini, who led the nationalist True Finns party to a surprising 19 percent of the vote in 2011 elections.

Farage took aim at European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and his call for the EU to be turned into a federation of nation states. "They're not pretending anymore," Farage said. "Mr Barroso ... used the F-word, it's out of the bag: it is going to be a federal Europe."

A referendum would be inevitable, Farage said.

But the possibility of an electoral pact with the Conservatives is not without danger for the UKIP. It could risk alienating the UKIP base, as happened to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg's Lib Dems, who are now denounced by some leftists who accuse the party of betraying its values for power.

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Pittsburgh police said they had serious concerns when an armed man took a business owner hostage in a downtown high-rise office building ? and not just because he had a knife.

The suspect, 22-year-old Klein Michael Thaxton, made Facebook posts during the five-hour ordeal Friday, authorities said, and they feared that responses from friends, family and others might goad him into violence.

In the end, police say, Thaxton surrendered peacefully and released businessman Charles Breitsman.

Now police believe that Thaxton might have chosen Breitsman because he spotted a smartphone and computer in his office and saw a high-profile opportunity to express himself on the social networking site, Chief Nathan Harper said.

Thaxton was arraigned early Saturday on felony charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault and making terroristic threats. He remains jailed on $1 million bail.

Harper said authorities might never know the reason Thaxton decided to take a hostage.

"We will leave that to the mental professionals to figure that out and get the man some help," Harper said. Thaxton will automatically receive a mental health review because of the charges.

Thaxton told police he left a halfway house about 3 a.m. Friday carrying a kitchen knife, hammer, cellphone and charger. After meandering through various neighborhoods, Thaxton arrived downtown at about 7 a.m. and briefly considered attacking two separate traffic officers with the hammer so he could steal their guns, police said.

"It makes me feel powerful when I have a gun," Harper said Thaxton told police.

Deciding he might get shot in the process, Thaxton instead sat and munched on a candy bar and noticed women streaming into a 24-story high-rise, police said. Without any particular goal, Thaxton took an elevator to two upper floors, found he couldn't get around without an electric key card and went down to the 16th floor.

That's where Thaxton saw the financial firm CW Breitsman Associates and the owner's name on the door. He also saw a smartphone, TV and computer and "felt this was the office where he needed to be," Harper said.

Except for the electronics, Thaxton's choosing the office was "totally random," Harper said, noting Thaxton didn't know Breitsman or his firm, which handles union pensions and insurance funds.

Police initially believed Thaxton had a gun because he told police negotiators he was going to shoot the victim. Instead, he threatened Breitsman with the knife, sat across a table from him breathing threats and, otherwise, used Breitsman's phone and computer to post mostly forlorn Facebook messages, police said.

"i cant take it no more im done bro," said one post.

"this life im livin rite now i dnt want anymore," another post said. "ive lost everything and I aint gettin it back."

Thaxton has been in legal trouble in recent months, pleading guilty in January to robbery for a carjacking last year. That crime was apparently on his mind, Harper said, because his carjacking victim was a woman and Thaxton told police the only other reason he picked Breitsman was that "he didn't want to victimize another female."

Thaxton was sentenced to six to 12 months in jail by the county's newly established court to help veterans with mental health and substance abuse issues. It wasn't immediately clear how Thaxton's service record contributed ? if at all ? to his mental health problems because he never saw active duty.

Instead, records show Thaxton served as a private in the U.S. Army from December 2008 to June 2010. The Army said he trained at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri before being assigned to Fort Riley in Kansas.

Whatever the motivation, Thaxton felt a need to call attention to his feelings through Facebook and told police he watched coverage of the hostage situation on his victim's TV.

Initially, police wanted the Facebook page kept open, hoping to gain useful information, but they later asked Facebook to take it down so that Thaxton could focus on conversations with police negotiators.

Most of the 700 or so responses to Thaxton's posts were from friends or family expressing their love. But a few were "ridiculous" and others were "outright distasteful," Harper said. Police were still sifting through them Friday, but Harper said any posters who authorities determine urged Thaxton to harm Breitsman or himself could eventually face charges, too.

Thaxton eventually told police negotiators he wanted to speak with an ex-girlfriend whom he hadn't seen since 2008. After shutting down the Facebook page and getting the woman on the phone to speak with Thaxton, he surrendered peacefully.

Breitsman was interviewed by detectives at police headquarters but left through a back door to avoid the media. He didn't return calls to his home Friday. Harper said the man was doing fine though "quite shaken."

Facebook didn't comment on the hostage-taking but referred reporters to a Web page that says it sometimes shares information with law enforcement if necessary to "prevent imminent bodily harm" to someone.

Some of the social network's nearly 1 billion users boast about their criminal exploits on Facebook, making it easier for law enforcement to catch them. Just last month, a woman charged with posing as a nurse and kidnapping a newborn at a Pittsburgh hospital was tracked down using messages she posted about her faked pregnancy on Facebook.

In Thaxton's case, Facebook didn't completely explain his actions nor would he as he was led past reporters at police headquarters.

Instead he grinned and ignored their questions saying, "I can't hear you, bro."

Drop 1 Pound?Every Week

Looking to shed belly fat? There's only one formula you need to know, and luckily for you, it's easier than anything you encountered in ninth-grade algebra. The magic equation is this:

CALORIES OUT - CALORIES IN = TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS (OR GAIN)

If staying slim comes down to simple math, why are so many Americans fat? The short answer: We're eating our weight in burgers and pasta. People tend to blame their extra flab on lack of exercise (the "calories out" part of the weight-loss equation), but the truth is, overeating is usually the biggest perpetrator of pudginess. It takes 3,500 calories to create one pound of body fat, so if you eat just 500 extra calories a day, you'll add one new pound to your gut each week. Make that a habit?like so many of us unwittingly do?and you're looking at 52 pounds of excess flab per year!

But here's the good news: You don't have to give up your favorite foods to keep the pounds at bay. Case in point: The following list of food swaps, excerpted from the new Eat This Not That! 2012. Make these tiny tweaks to your diet, and you'll subtract thousands of calories without sacrificing an ounce of flavor. See, isn't math fun? (If you don't like math, let Men's Health give you easy food swaps daily with the free Eat This, Not That! Newsletter!)

Long John's is one of the few fast-food chains still filling its fryers with trans fats. That's especially worrisome considering that the chain tops each Baja Fish Taco with a big scoop of "Crumblies," the deep-fried shards of trans fatty batter that might qualify as the least heart-friendly food on the planet. Baja Fresh, on the other hand, manages to both fry its fish and embellish it with tangy sauce without inflicting a gram of trans fatty damage. And instead of Crumblies, Baja tops its tacos with pico de gallo, a nutritionally rich flavor enhancer with just a handful of calories. And what's shocking is the part you can't see: Roughly a quarter of the sugar in the Lemon Twist Strawberry comes from added sweeteners. That's 150 unnecessary calories. In contrast, Jamba's smoothie earns the majority of its 58 grams of sugar from real fruit or fruit juice. And the 30-ounce smoothie you see here? It's the biggest you can order. The potential for excess is every bit as high with turkey as it is for any other burger. If the patty is riddled with fat and buried under calorie-dense accoutrements, it's going to cause damage, and that's true whether the meat comes from turkey, ostrich, or organic parakeet. Thanks to an oversized patty and an excessively buttered bun, Ruby's take on turkey has just 39 fewer calories than its hulking Bacon Cheeseburger. In your own kitchen you can construct a turkey burger with a quarter-pound patty, a slice of cheese, and a big scoop of guacamole for 400 to 500 calories, so that's exactly what you should expect when you eat out. Thankfully, that's what Carl's Jr. delivers.

The childhood obesity rate has more than tripled over the past three decades, and much of that owes to the obscenely high-calorie entrees being served by unscrupulous chain restaurants. Unless you were nutritionally clairvoyant, you'd never guess that one of these bowls contains 165 percent more saturated fat than a full-grown adult should consume in an entire day. Kids' menus should be bastions of safe eating, but not one of Cheesecake Factory's kids' meals has fewer than 500 calories, and at least five exceed 900. Order from Olive Garden's menu instead and you'll cut the calorie tariff by two-thirds. And top it with a few spears of broccoli?kids will eat vegetables as long as cheese is involved.

Walmart to stop selling Amazon's Kindle line of readers and tablets

Walmart to stop selling Amazon's Kindle line of readers and tabletsIt's a lonely world when you've no storefronts to call your own. Shortly after Target decided it best to halt the sales of Amazon's Kindle products, it's being reported that Walmart is following suit. A quote obtained by Reuters suggests that Wally World's bigwigs won't be carrying Amazon tablets and e-readers "beyond the existing inventory and purchase commitments." And yes, that includes "all Kindle models current and recently announced." No actual reasoning was given beyond the conventional company line, but one has to wonder if Walmart isn't somehow considering getting into some of the businesses that it was previously helping Amazon push.

It's also taken a plunge with Vudu, as it's offering an in-store disc-to-digital UltraViolet conversion as well. You might say that Walmart would never, ever start hawking its own e-readers, but crazier things have happened -- Best Buy has an entire brand devoted to in-house goods, and Amazon itself has expanded from an online storefront for laundry detergent and bestselling novels to a bona fide hardware mainstay.

Walmart to stop selling Amazon's Kindle line of readers and tablets originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 12:32:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Syrian TV: Helicopter crashes near Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) ? A Syrian military helicopter crashed in a rebellious suburb of Damascus on Thursday, state-run TV said, but the circumstances in which the aircraft went down were not immediately clear.

The brief Syrian TV report said the helicopter crashed southeast of Douma, a suburb that has witnessed repeated military crackdowns to purge fighters seeking to topple President Bashar Assad. No further details were made available.

"We heard the sound of several explosions and some gunfire, and few minutes later, we were told that a helicopter had crashed," said Mohammad Saeed, an activist in Douma.

In Damascus, soldiers raided a Palestinian refugee camp where many Syrians from other parts of the country's capital and its suburbs have been sheltering, arresting dozens of people in a sweeping operation, the government and opposition groups said.

Syrian TV said an army unit conducted a "special operation" during which about 100 gunmen were captured in the Palestinian refugee camps of Yarmouk and Palestine in Damascus. It gave no further details.

The Local Coordination Committees activist network reported gunfire and several casualties that accompanied the raid. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said three people were killed and dozens of others were arrested when troops stormed parts of the Yarmouk camp that has provided shelter for many residents of Damascus' Hajar al-Aswad district, an area has seen heavy fighting between rebels and government troops in recent days.

The government increasingly has been using helicopters and other aircraft in its fight against an 18-month-old rebellion against the Assad rule. Rebels have claimed to have shot down helicopters and warplanes in the past, although the regime has blamed most of the problems on mechanical difficulties.

Saeed said Syrian MiG warplanes and helicopter gunships had been flying low over the southeastern part of Douma before Thursday's crash. Speaking via Skype from Douma, he said the helicopter crashed in a district known as Tal Kurdi near a factory for household items.

Rebels in Syria are fighting mostly with light weapons. Still, they are increasingly claiming success in downing government aircraft.

In the first week of September, rebels said they shot down a MiG aircraft in Abu al-Dhuhour, an area in the northwestern province of Idlib. On Aug. 13, rebels claimed to have shot down a regime MiG-23 warplane and captured the pilot in Deir el-Zour. Syria said the pilot ejected after a technical malfunction in the fighter jet.

Analysis: Tough tactics leave Emanuel bruised in fight with Chicago teachers

CHICAGO (Reuters) - There is room to debate who won the battle between Chicago and its striking teachers union but there is little disagreement the strike and the deal approved by union members on Tuesday mark a personal loss for Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

University of California-Berkeley professor and labor historian Harley Shaiken described the deal as a win for both sides, saying the teachers "won overall on points" because they maintained public support and got a compromise deal.

But he said the strike by 29,000 school teachers and staff that began September 10 underscored the limits of Emanuel's powers.

"Rahm has been bruised by this fight, but he's still standing," Shaiken said. "He may have to learn that using a bulldozer isn't the most effective tool to be used in all circumstances."

Emanuel, a Chicago-born former Democratic Congressman and top White House aide to U.S. President Barack Obama, developed a reputation over the years in Washington as a street-wise, profane, tough-talking yet effective and influential politician.

His campaign in the mayoral race in 2011 brought in $14.3 million, dwarfing the fundraising efforts of his five opponents and making him seem at times like the inevitable winner.

Since taking office he has cultivated an image of being "a chief executive who can get things done," said Dick Simpson, a political science professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and former Chicago city council member.

But instead of clinching a deal with the Chicago Teachers Union, Emanuel found himself in an often personal confrontation with teachers, many of whom described the mayor as a bully and a wealthy man out of touch with the labor movement, a vital part of the Democratic coalition for nearly 80 years.

The more than week-long strike was even seen as potentially damaging to Obama's re-election chances if it dragged on, as it could have strained relations with national unions. A long strike would likely have hurt local public support for the union, especially among parents of the 350,000 children affected.

The deal reached takes the pressure off the union and Obama.

"The timing of this was absolutely toxic for all involved," said Gary Chaison, a professor of industrial relations at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. "I have no doubt the White House was urging Emanuel to get this done quickly."

Emanuel has denied the Obama administration pressured him.

Weakened by the dispute, analysts said Chicago's mayor has alienated the labor movement in ways that could cause him more trouble down the line.

The teachers union specifically agreed to only a minimum three years for the contract to put "our next contract campaign right in the midst of the next mayoral election campaign."

His attempt to force the teachers back to work by seeking a court injunction was just seen as making things worse.

"Going to court was a terrible move," Chaison said. "It was highly confrontational and will create problems with other unions in the city."

EMANUEL LOSES BATTLE, WINS WAR?

The dispute between Chicago's teachers and the city came down to benefits and, most importantly, an evaluation system for teachers that the union fiercely opposed.

Emanuel can justly claim that while he may have lost the battle he also may have won the war. The new contract lengthens the school day and, for the first time in 40 years, puts in place a teacher evaluation system that includes weightings for standardized student tests. In school closings and rehires, the mayor also retained almost complete discretion, agreeing only to establish a pool of high-rated teachers eligible for rehiring after layoffs.

All those were major goals for Emanuel and positive outcomes for any Emanuel financial backers associated with the national education reform movement. But many no doubt also saw the tough-guy mayor as giving in too much.

Emanuel's compromised on the new teacher evaluation system by phasing in the new plan over several years and reducing the weighting of standardized test results. Analysts saw that as a victory for Karen Lewis, the veteran chemistry teacher and combative new union leader who led the union out on strike.

"The big winner here is Karen Lewis," said John Tillman, CEO of the conservative Illinois Policy Institute. "She played a big hand and she won. Rahm Emanuel is the big loser."

"I think Rahm went into this thinking he had more leverage than he did," he added.

Tillman said the solution for Emanuel now, especially with the school district's $665 million budget deficit even before the latest raises in the new contract, is to increase the number of so-called charter schools in Chicago.

Charters - publicly funded but largely non-union - have a mixed record of improving student academic performance, studies show. But school closures will be a budget necessity, analysts said.

The new teachers contract also freezes employee health care contributions, which Thomas Wassel, a New York-based lawyer at law firm Cullen and Dykman who specializes in labor and employment law, said "would be a significant victory for the union" at a time when union benefits are under siege.

Such compromises at the end of the brief yet acrimonious dispute hurt Emanuel at a time when the city faces contract talks with other unions, notably with the police and fire departments, said Simpson.

"Rahm has managed to make the unions more opposed to him," he said. "It's very likely the labor movement will actively seek a challenger for Emanuel."

New Rochelle, NY, September 19, 2012More than 900 million people worldwide are active users of the social networking site Facebook, and it is estimated that as many as one-third report using Facebook to check on the activities of former romantic partners. The effects of remaining Facebook friends with an ex-lover or even just following their activities online can disrupt a person's ability to heal emotionally and move on with his or her life, according to an article in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert Inc., publishers (http://www.liebertpub.com). The article is available free online on the Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking website.

The study entitled "Facebook Surveillance of Former Romantic Partners: Associations with PostBreakup Recovery and Personal Growth" assessed the effects of continued Facebook contact with an ex-partner and of Facebook surveillance, in which there is no actual online contact, but one individual monitors the Facebook page and postings of another.

The study collected data from 464 participants to evaluate their Facebook usage and their emotional recovery and personal adjustment following the breakup of a romantic relationship. It evaluated parameters such as negative feelings, sexual desire and emotional longing for the ex-partner, and feelings of reduced personal growth as measures of distress and the ability to move forward with their lives.

"This study sees again virtual life mirroring real life. Just as real life contact with ex-partners may inhibit growth, healing, and well-being, so may virtual contact," says Brenda K. Wiederhold, PhD, MBA, BCIA, Editor-in-Chief of Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, from the Interactive Media Institute, San Diego, CA.

Compound found in purple corn may aid in developing future treatments for type 2 diabetes, kidney disease

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? Diabetic nephropathy is one of the most serious complications related to diabetes, often leading to end-stage kidney disease. Purple corn grown in Peru and Chile is a relative of blue corn, which is readily available in the U.S. The maize is rich in anthocyanins (also known as flavonoids), which are reported to have anti-diabetic properties.

Scientists from the Department of Food and Nutrition and Department of Biochemistry at Hallym University in Korea investigated the cellular and molecular activity of purple corn anthocyanins (PCA) to determine whether and how it affects the development of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Their findings suggest that PCA inhibits multiple pathways involved in the development of DN, which may help in developing therapies aimed at type 2 diabetes and kidney disease.

The study is entitled "Purple corn anthocyanins inhibit diabetes-associated glomerular monocyte activation and macrophage infiltration." It appears in the online edition of the American Journal of Physiology -- Renal Physiology, published by the American Physiological Society.

Methodology

Researcher Min-Kyung Kang and colleagues performed a two-part study, an in vitro experiment investigating the effects of PCA on human endothelial cells cultured under hyperglycemic kidney conditions and an in vivo study that investigated the effects of PCA on kidney tissue in diabetic mice. In the in vitro experiment, cultured cells were exposed to 1-20 ?g/ml of PCA for six hours (control cells were not exposed), then assessed for level of monocyte-endothelial cell adhesion, a major factor in the development of diabetic glomerulosclerosis. In the in vivo experiment, diabetic and control mice were dosed with PCA for eight weeks, then changes in kidney tissue were assessed and immunohistological analyses were performed. Kidney tissue was further analyzed for levels of inflammatory chemokines, which are key components in DN.

Results

Researchers found that in human endothelial cells cultured in hyperglycemic kidney conditions, induction of endothelial cell adhesion molecules decreased in a dose-dependent manner with PCA exposure, meaning that the PCA likely interfered with cell-cell adhesion in glomeruli. PCA also appeared to interfere with leukocyte recruitment and adhesion to glomerular endothelial cells. In diabetic mice, PCA exposure slowed mesangial expansion and interrupted the cellular signaling pathway that may instigate glomerular adhesion and infiltration of inflammatory cells responsible for diabetic glomerulosclerosis. Finally, PCA inhibited levels of macrophage inflammatory protein-2 and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 in kidney tissue, demonstrating that it may inhibit macrophage infiltration, which is closely related to renal inflammation.

Importance of the Findings

The research suggests that anthocyanins may be the main biofunctional compound in purple corn and could protect against mesangial activation of monocytes and infiltration of macrophages in glomeruli -- the two major contributors to DN. The research further suggests that renoprotection by PCA against mesangial activation may be specific therapies targeting diabetes-associated diabetic glomerulosclerosis and renal inflammation. Finally, PCA supplementation may be an important strategy in preventing renal vascular disease in type 2 diabetes.

"PCA may be a potential renoprotective agent treating diabetes-associated glomerulosclerosis," wrote the researchers.

Research Team

In addition to Min-Kyung Kang, the study team included Jing Li, Ju-Hyun Gong, Su-Nam Kwak, Jung Han Yoon Park, Soon Sung Lim and Young-Hee Kang, all also of the Department of Food and Nutrition at Hallym University in Korea, and Jae-Yong Lee, of the Department of Biochemistry at Hallym University.

This study was funded by a grant from the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries through Korea Institute of Planning and Evaluation for Technology of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; and by the National Research Foundation of Korea.

Simsbury Nonprofit Group Marks September With Blood Cancer ...

It?s been almost 20 years since leukemia claimed the life of 43-year-old Rob Branham. But for family and friends of the Simsbury resident, the passion to help others battling the same disease has never faltered and the emotional weight of the month of September remains heavy.

September is National Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma Awareness Month.

For the past several years during the month of September, the Rob Branham Foundation, a nonprofit group created in Branham?s memory, has dedicated its efforts to raising awareness of leukemia and other blood disorders. The organization, headquartered in West Simsbury, also provides funding for bone marrow testing.

?As the month of September brings leukemia and other blood cancers into focus, our goal continues to be to educate the public about the disease, including its prevalence, treatment options, and resources,? Lin Branham, who works in her late husband?s memory as president of the Rob Branham Foundation, said in a press release. ?Great advances have been made in research and treatment, but the battle is far from over.?

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1 million North Americans are fighting blood cancers, the third-leading cause of cancer death. Every four minutes, someone in North America is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every 10 minutes, someone dies from one of these diseases, according to the society.

Leukemia, Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes are types of cancer that can affect the bone marrow, the blood cells, the lymph nodes and other parts of the lymphatic system.

Branham, who was diagnosed with leukemia in January 1992, underwent a bone marrow transplant after a year-and-a-half search for a non-related donor, according to information on the foundation?s website. The surgery was successful and, on Sept. 3, 1993, he returned home to begin his recovery. During that time, unexpected complications arose, which eventually claimed his life on Oct. 12, 1993.

Filled with endless energy, Branham was affectionately known as ?Mr. Positive.?

He was an avid runner and water skier, loved music, and collected antique radios and televisions. He began his broadcasting career in high school, and worked in the Hartford radio market as the local sales manager at WDRC and Channel 61, and before that as account executive at WTNH-TV, Channel 8, and WFSB-TV, Channel 3.

National Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma Awareness Month, which is celebrated in communities throughout the nation, was also recognized by the Simsbury Board of Selectmen in a proclamation at its Sept. 10 meeting.

Conducting Business Across Cultures and Borders | 2leep.in - Free ...

Conducting business across countries and borders begin by good discussion, and people who have good management skills and negotiating skills. Executives cannot discuss productively in a global market place if they do not possess essential negotiating talents and skills. Professionals can not discuss properly if they neglect these places? countries, values, and rituals. The differences in countries, values, and rituals produce difficulties in the act of successful settlement. Consequently, supervisors should try to learn the differences in cultures and traditions from these countries, one-by-one in order to efficiently and effectively execute a successful negotiation and be able to manage across cultures and borders. It can also be important to know that because of our traditions and ethnic differences, persons do not believe, judge, respond, understand, and reason alike. Consequently, based on negotiators? model, they should learn how to adapt to the cultures of these places that are very different from their store, in which they plan to do business with. Wise negotiators are motivated to empathically accept and adjust to these customs and cultures for the benefit of profits. Before doing global markets, there are items that managers should find out. They want to focus on the following:( 1) How to get ready for negotiations( 2) How to develop relationships with their counterparts( 3) How much company relevant information could be shared( 4) How to tell the other side to agree on problems that issue to them( 5) What to confess on( 6) How to structure the final agreementCross-cultural negotiations require thorough planning in order to keep ahead and benefit from the other party. In order to avoid problems, supervisors have to be aware of the issues like social differences, language, values, habits, family setting, differences with time, work habits, and religion. Different areas have different negotiating styles. So, when professionals familiarize themselves with your important negotiating methods, they could understand the negotiating varieties of their brethren. It?s usually advisable that firms do a study of the united states that they are entering settlement, in order to understand how their negotiating designs change from their own. Analysis will help in exposing their value system, behaviors, and attitude towards foreign firms. To stay ahead is the beginning of a great proposal strategy. In building connections, managers should look for ideal partners; who they are able to trust, respect, and be comfortable working with. The tactical partners would be the people which are knowledgeable about countries, habits, and languages. Many developing countries implement their contract predicated on their connection and contacts. Such places seldom adhere to the legal process because when a fresh leader is available in, those legal contracts will undoubtedly be null and void. Therefore, it pays to create a solid relationship. In order to share information, a focus band of businessmen and women is advised in order to examine the difficulties that matter to each party. In this capacity, playing position reversal just before attending the session is preferred. Typically, questions are asked by both parties to address their concerns, the issues that matter in their mind, and responses are presented by both parties in response to those issues and concerns. In capitalist countries, like the United States of America, businesses use primary approach in negotiations, during other countries, an oblique approach is used. Some countries uses the controversy approach in a negotiation; others embrace the detail focused, suspicious of what is in there for them or their brethren, casual, or method approach. Businesses should learn how to adapt to each environment in order to be successful.Persuading one other party to improve its initial location is a good approach in negotiation. It is recommended that each party focus on what matters in their mind, and to convince the other party to accept the offer, and also make a few concessions when appropriate. Most of all, it?ll serve supervisors well should they discuss ahead of time before arriving at the negotiating table. Few contributing countries resolve their differences beforehand predicated on their cultures, behaviors, and the way they do business. Supervisors have to do a local research in order to spot those countries, and when such countries are identified; doing a backdoor arbitration is advised since that is the way organizations are performed by those countries. It?s essential to avoid the strategies of misleading the other party as that might present, or guide to potential difficulties in the future. It also proposed that parties choose well in advance what they are prepared to acknowledge to the other party. This strategy will vary in line with the culture of the other party. Giving limited information is a good technique for not giving up on the energy of negotiation, and seeking information of the other party helps to know what sort of information to provide out.Contracts vary in line with the culture of a participating nation. Whilst the United States Of America worth agreements as binding documents, some view it as insults, some as insufficient trust, different may possibly renege on it because of political pressure or instability, and some will rather conduct business on trust and common understanding. Whoever the country is, knowing its culture and behavior is just a key to an effective mediation and ways to making profit.

Old Bridge Dental Aftercare: Treatments to Make Time For ...

Plenty of people who are required to undergo an dental in Old Bridge procedure would schedule their consultations at their comfort. Even though this is fine for simple treatment such as a general cleaning or teeth whitening, it may not be recommendable for certain advanced dental procedures. Learn about dental treatment options requiring time for recovery.

Root Canal Treatment

Dentists commonly require root canal treatment for teeth where infections have gone through the enamel, which affects a tooth?s nerve endings. Even though this treatment solution is rarely painful in the hands of capable specialists, recovery is for many hours following treatment.

Your dentist will prescribe after care procedures you should follow. These could be prescriptions for discomfort supervision medication, a soft diet, or avoiding exertive activities for the initial few days. If you believe you need root canal treatment, try to schedule it on a long weekend.

Wisdom Tooth Elimination

Depending on the keeping your wisdom tooth as well as the natural positioning of your tooth, wisdom teeth removal might not be necessary at all. For those who need these teeth eliminated, however, the procedure may demand a couple of days to recover specifically in case of erupted teeth.

Try to sleep as long as you?re prescribed pain management medication. The pain you will feel after a wisdom tooth removal may have you in no fit state to pay attention to your work. Returning to work in stressful environments may worsen the pain you are feeling.

Dental and Denture Implants

Implants are the solution to permanent loss of tooth. As these types of aesthetic implants need surgery, the recovery period will require as long as most surgeries. The dentist surgically implants the tooth root into your gum area or jawbone where they?ll screw the prosthesis over. Typically, the cosmetic dentist will attach the permanent prosthesis on a separate session.

Recovery period differ depending on the variety of implants. For about a couple of implants, you will need to recover for a few weeks. In the case of total restorative treatments like the all on four implant, healing and rehabilitation may take as much as several months.

Sedation Dentistry

Most intrusive dental procedures require some type of anesthesia. These types of treatment solutions will accordingly need to have a few hours of sleep. For sleep dentistry, the dentist will use general anesthesia to render you unconscious. With common anesthesia, easy dental treatment normally done at the patient?s convenience may require a couple of hours of rest.

If you plan to have any dental treatment with sleep dentistry, bring a friend or relative able to drive you to and from the clinic. You ought to take the day off or keep from resuming your projects for the rest of the day after your dental visit.

Irrespective of a routine check-up or a main cosmetic procedure like denture implants, try to schedule your own appointment away from important days. This is especially essential when you have dental fear. Going through medical treatments are usually stressful enough without the stress of work hanging over your shoulders during the procedure.

Judge holds off order to end Chicago teacher strike

As the Chicago teachers strike entered its second week, disappointment is starting to grow. NBC's Rehema Ellis reports.

By NBCChicago.com and wire services

Updated at?7:09?p.m. ET: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's effort to use the courts to end a strike by thousands of public school teachers stalled on Monday as the contentious walkout moved into a second week.

During a short meeting, Judge Peter Flynn of Cook County Circuit Court postponed until Wednesday a request to hold an immediate? hearing on an injunction to stop the strike,?city law department spokesman Roderick Drew said.?

Striking teachers are due to meet on Tuesday to decide whether to end the strike after delaying a decision on Sunday. Picketing at dozens of schools by teachers continued on Monday but was thinned by the Rosh Hashanah holiday.

Striking Chicago public school teachers picket outside of the Jose De Diego Community Academy on Sept. 17, 2012.

The Chicago Public Schools filed a complaint in circuit court against the Chicago Teachers Union seeking a preliminary injunction "to end the strike immediately." It cited?two reasons: danger to "public health and safety" of the students and alleged violation of Illinois state law that prohibits strikes except for wages and benefits.

"State law expressly prohibits the CTU from striking over non-economic issues, such as layoff and recall policies, teacher evaluations, class sizes and the length of the school day and year," the school district said in a statement. "The CTU's repeated statements and recent advertising campaign have made clear that these are exactly the subjects over which the CTU is striking."

Deepening rift
Emanuel's move took the dispute into uncharted territory as no injunction request has been filed in an Illinois education labor dispute since 1984, when the state gave Chicago teachers the right to strike. It also deepens the rift between the Democratic mayor, a top fundraiser for President Barack Obama's campaign, and organized labor, which generally backs Democratic candidates.

John Gress

Chicago Teachers Union members leave a House of Delegates meeting on the seventh day of their strike in Chicago, September 16, 2012.

The dispute between Emanuel, a former top White House aide to Obama, and the union had been close to resolution on Sunday when the union bargaining team recommended to a meeting of union activists that the five-day strike be suspended.

But a majority of the 800 or so union delegates, wary of promises made by Emanuel and the Chicago Public Schools, ignored the leadership and extended the strike until at least Tuesday.

The famously short-tempered Emanuel immediately issued a statement saying he would go to court to try to have the strike declared illegal.

"We are done negotiating," Chicago Board of Education President David Vitale said on Monday.

View NBCChicago.com for more coverage on the Chicago strike

Only a fraction of the 350,000 elementary, middle school and high school students affected by the strike have been using 147 schools manned by principals and non-union staff who have provided meals and activities for part of the school day.

About 80 percent of Chicago public school students qualify for free meals due to low family incomes. Churches, community centers and park facilities have also tried to provide help for parents.

For some Chicago parents, patience?was wearing thin.

"I'm very frustrated that it's taken this long," said Renee Edwards, a mother whose son attends Ray Elementary School on Chicago's south side. "Parents were not told until 10 p.m. last night what the outcome would be, so it's just frustrating."

City council members also have been getting an earful from constituents.

"They feel that the negotiations have been taken to a personal level instead of negotiating on the best interests of our kids in the school," said Ray Suarez, a Chicago?alderman.

?Parents are very concerned,"?said Walter Burnett Jr., another alderman.?"There's a lot of concern about their kids. A lot of parents are leaving their kids at home."

'Not happy'
Delegates from the Chicago Teachers Union told their bargaining team Sunday that they want to meet with the schools they represent before making a decision about whether to end their strike.

"They?re not happy with the agreement and would like it to be a lot better for us than it is," Union President Karen Lewis said in a news briefing Sunday evening, adding that they are returning to their schools with the proposal because they do not want to feel rushed to make a decision.

A union bargaining team and city officials had worked?out a proposed contract that would move away from merit pay and allow teachers to appeal their evaluations.?

A faction of the union sees it as a "backroom deal" that does not have unified support. A source close to the union told NBC Chicago that Lewis' caucus shouted obscenities at her and other leaders late Saturday night, saying, "You sold out" and, "Rahm's getting everything they wanted, what the hell did we get?"????

At the heart of those who oppose this new deal are those who feel the negotiating team did not fight for paraprofessionals and special education teachers and students.

Some delegates shouted at Lewis there was "no way to vote on something we haven't seen."

Teachers revolted last week against sweeping education reforms sought by Emanuel, especially evaluating teachers based on the standardized test scores of their students. They also fear a wave of neighborhood school closings that could result in mass teacher layoffs. They want a guarantee that laid-off teachers will be recalled for other jobs in the district.

The contract includes what Lewis called victories for the 29,000 union members, which she outlined on the union?s website:??

As the Chicago teachers strike enters its second week, Mayor Rahm Emanuel hopes to get students back into schools by heading to court. City lawyers are seeking an injunction to force teachers back into the classroom as soon as possible.

PAY: The teachers union wants a three-year contract that guarantees a 3-percent increase the first year and 2-percent increases for the second and third years. The contract also includes the possibility of being extended a fourth year with a 3-percent raise. A first-year teacher earns about $49,000,?according to the National Council on Teacher Quality; the highest-paid teacher earns $92,227.

Chicago Public Schools would move away from merit pay for individual teachers.

EVALUATION:?Teachers would be evaluated 70 percent in terms of how they teach (?teacher practice?) and 30 percent in terms of how their students improve (?student growth?). Evaluations will not affect tenured teachers during the first year, and teachers may appeal their evaluation.??

HIRES:?Responding to parent demands, Chicago Public Schools would hire more than 600 teachers specialized in art, music, physical education and foreign languages, among other teacher specialties. More than half of large school districts rehire laid-off teachers, according to The New York Times; the Chicago school board has pushed to leave control to principals.

Those new hires will allow for the longer class day --?which will be seven hours for elementary school students, up from five hours and 45 minutes. Chicago had been known for one of the shortest school days in the country -- a point that became a sticking point for Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Of those new hires, half must be union employees who were previously laid off. (Higher-rated teachers would have a better chance at being rehired,?the Chicago Tribune reported.)

BULLYING:?The contract demands ending bullying by principals and managerial personnel to ?curtail some of the abusive practices that have run rampant in many neighborhood schools.? Principals, however, will continue to exercise power over hiring teachers,?the Tribune reported.

In one instance,?according to CBS Chicago, dozens of complaints were made about a principal at Josiah Pickard Elementary School during his five years on the job. A union representative told CBS Chicago that the volume of complaints was not normal for a principal.

Reuters contributed to this report.
