In late June,a powerful windstorm ? known as a ?derecho? ? tore through Northern Virginia. A resultingpower failure at Verizon?s facilities left approximately 1.5 million of its customers in the region unable to call 911 emergency centers during the storm. Furthermore, the blackout interrupted the company?s ability to monitor its own systems, causing delays to repair efforts.

A recent report from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) called the failures ?unacceptable.? In its report, released on January 10, the FCC criticized Verizon for allowing multiple ?planning and system failures? to occur in connection with the derecho.

The report said that, ?In most cases, the 911 and other problems could and would have been avoided,? if providers had followed the maintenance and testing guidelines that had previously been identified as ?best practices? by industry groups.

The FCC is considering a range of potential recommendations for bolstering the strength of critical domestic communications networks. Regulators can be expected to maintain pressure on companies involved with the industry, as service disruptions can put entire populations in danger.

In a comparable way, companies that operate transportation fleets play a critical role in many vital sectors, such as food and medical supply chains.
